When I first heard the phrase trauma informed business coach, I had two thoughts.
The first was: Oh wow, that’s exactly what I needed 10 years ago.
The second was: Well, shit—no wonder I was stuck for so long.
I spent years of my entrepreneurial life overworking, undercharging, hiding from visibility, and beating myself up for not being able to push through. I consumed all the “right” business advice. I ran a successful publishing company. I even sold it. But behind the scenes, I was burned out, dissociating, and frozen in a cycle of fear, shame, and self-doubt that traditional business coaching (and traditional therapy, for that matter) couldn’t even begin to touch.
Now, as a trauma informed business coach myself, I help others heal what I wish I’d understood sooner.
A Definition Worth Unpacking
According to TraumaInformedCoaching.com (which is where I received my TICC certification), trauma informed coaching is:
“…an approach that holds space for the biological, psychological, and emotional impact of trauma on the brain and nervous system, and incorporates that understanding into the coaching relationship to prevent harm and promote healing.”
That’s the technical version.
But what does it really mean when you’re running a business and trying to stay afloat through actual trauma responses like:
- Procrastination that’s really nervous system freeze
- “Accountability issues” that are actually fawn responses
- Pricing anxiety rooted in family shame or poverty trauma
- Productivity spirals that come from unhealed internalized ableism
- Impostor syndrome so strong it feels like sabotage
That’s where trauma-informed coaching isn’t just helpful—it’s necessary.
When Hustle Culture Doesn’t Heal You
Most business coaching programs are built for people with privilege, capacity, and regulation. They’re great at teaching strategy, but they often pathologize or ignore the impact of trauma and neurodivergence.
I used to believe I had a “money mindset problem” because I couldn’t seem to hold onto success without sabotaging it. What I actually had was a lifetime of unresolved trauma around safety, betrayal, and self-worth. It showed up in how I priced my offers, how I avoided being seen, and how I collapsed under pressure.
I believed I was just “bad at accountability” or “lazy,” when in fact I was stuck in a chronic fawn-freeze loop. I couldn’t advocate for myself because doing so had been dangerous in my family system. I couldn’t stick to plans because my nervous system didn’t know how to trust calm. Most productivity tools didn’t work for me. They actually made it worse. Because until I learned to work with my nervous system, not against it, every task felt like a threat.
The Parts of Us That Need Leading
A trauma informed business coach doesn’t try to “fix” you. They help you befriend the parts of you that have been doing all the heavy lifting.
The overworker.
The perfectionist.
The fawner.
The inner critic who’s just trying to keep you safe by keeping you small.
In my practice, I use parts work and somatic coaching to help you reconnect to your Self—the grounded, wise part of you that can lead without force or fear. We work at the speed of safety. Not urgency. Not external expectations.
Because you don’t need a better to-do list.
You need a space where your nervous system can exhale and your creativity can come back online.
What to Expect in Trauma Informed Business Coaching
Here’s what working with a trauma informed business coach actually looks like:
- You’ll unpack why visibility, pricing, or structure feels hard—without shame
- You’ll start to notice and name your survival strategies (and learn to thank them, not fight them)
- You’ll build a business model that respects your capacity, lived experience, strengths AND weaknesses
- You’ll get support for making aligned decisions, not just chasing goals
- You’ll feel less alone in the messiness—and more rooted in your own power
- You won’t get gaslit. You won’t get pushed into strategies that override your nervous system. And you definitely won’t be told to “manifest harder” when things feel off.
TL;DR
A trauma informed business coach helps you build a business (and a life) from the inside out—not from pressure, panic, or performance, but from regulation, clarity, and wholeness. We don’t bypass the hard stuff—we walk with it. We don’t wait until you “believe in yourself”—we help you take action even while scared. And we don’t force you to change overnight—we help you lead yourself gently, with accountability that honors your history and your humanity.
